My wife took me and the kids to serve dinner at the Union Station Homeless Services with South Pasadena Chinese-American Club (SPCC). It was the kids first time serving the homeless. The USHS is a 3 month program which takes in homeless and provides training opportunities, housing, and counseling. The homeless folks we met there were kind and thankful. I hope the kids see that helping the homeless is a regular thing. It’s regular folks that are down on their luck, just temporary bad times. There are places like this that help people get back on their feet. I hope the kids lose their fear of homeless people, and replace it with compassion, matched with action. I’m sure we’ll go back again.
SPCC has been serving dinner at there for 15+ years, on the first Sunday evening of the month. SPCC usually buys local Chinese food and serve it up. Jeannie (next to BK in the picture) has been doing it for awhile. She showed us the ropes and was very nice and welcoming to the kids. She brought two new people with her too. We served about 50 dinners of Broccoli Beef, Kung Pao Chicken, rice, cookies, and milk.
