Double Olympic Triathlon

Training days gone wild. Two Olympic triathlons back to back.

My friends are signed up for the American Triple T. Four Events in 3 days. More details here. Mainly, it’s in Ohio, and there’s a Sprint (Fri), two Olympics (Sat), Half Ironman 70.3 (Sun). Craziness. Anyway, today was their training day and I joined them for morale support.

At TTT, the Oly’s are different orders:

#1: Swim – Bike – Run (that’s normal)

#2: BIKE – swim -Run (that’s not normal)

We home based at Rose Bowl Aquatic Center. We swam 1650 yds (~1.5k). I shared a lane with Luis. It was good. We had four or five lanes full of us. We rode familiar routes around Pasadena for 24.8 miles (~40k). Then, we ran two loops around the Rose Bowl for 6.3 miles (~10k). The weather was kinda iffy. It had rained the night before and all the rides were still wet in the morning. There was a stiff cold breeze all day long. Clouds were coming and going. It didn’t really warm up that much. It was good running weather.

There as a big lunch break, and since I was close to home, I went home and had lunch with my daughter.

Olympic #2 was harder. The bike was fine. The swim was fine. I had a pull buoy and shared a lane with Bryan. But, the run sucked. I only finished 3.3 miles (1 loop around the Bowl) and I had to go home. 10 hrs of this stuff and I gotta go home as do stuff. I think the order and logistics were so different from a normal race, that the nutrition thing was all off. I was really tired at the start of the run, and my belly was sloshing around way too much to run.

  1. The American Triple T is a great event and challenges the body in a different way than most triathlons. The distance is the same or close to the distance of a full Ironman race, but split up over three days. The biggest difference is the speed of the races, in a full Ironman one finds themselves pacing for a long day, at the TTT you find yourself racings the individuals races faster on Friday and Saturday and starting the half on Sunday on sore tired legs. That is my experience from doing the Triple T three times (2012,2013,2014).
