Ride Report – La Canada to Newcomb’s Ranch

54.64 miles, 5:00 moving time, 6,371 ft ascent

Lynda, Bill, Peter, Bert, Elsa, Greg M, Gregg D, Mark, Steve, Mike W, Philip, Paul G., Joe, Alvin, Julian, Bob, Ray, Kirk.

The Club met at Starbucks at La Canada. Mild winds and cloudy. Unknown weather in the mountains. Layers and layers, just in case. We needed it too.

Mile 1. Picked up LC locals Gregg, Bob, Ray.

Mile 1-3. Easy Route, Straight up Angeles Crest Highway for 27 miles. Steep climbing out of La Canada to Fire Station. Clouds moving. Some blue skies, but kept us guessing all day. Moderate auto traffic. Not as crazy as prior months. Maybe everyone is headed back to the mall and Disneyland, and getting off the mountain.

Mile 7: Gregg and I were shedding a layer during the climb. He found $1. Then I found a $5, and another $5. The bills were floating across the parking area. Ha!

Mile 9: Clear Creek.

Mile 15: Red Box. The Haramokngna American Indian Cultural Center has cold drinks, potty stop, and a new drinking fountain.

Mile 16-28: Riding along the ridge. Rollers. Forest still shows burned out areas from last years wild fires. Winds and clouds picked up. Got cold. Put my sleeves and wind breaker on.

Mile 27: I stopped to take a scenic picture and met Kirk.

Mile 27.3: Newcomb’s Ranch. Turn around point. Lots of Motobikes. Spot to sit and snack. The restaurant is closed and up for sale. Sad result of last year. Cold at the top. Everyone bundled up before the descent.

Mile 37: Rollers mostly down. Then Mile 37-39. Climbing back to Red Box. The climbing warmed us up for a bit.

Mile 54: Fast descent through Clear Creek and into La Canada. Snacks at Starbucks. Air warmed up as we came back into town.

This was a great ride, with lots of climbing and great scenery. Really getting away from it all.
