Mt. Wilson Ride Report

38.3 miles, 3:28 moving time, 4,695 ft ascent, 17 trophies

We rode Angeles Crest Highway up to Mt. Wilson Observatory. This is the first time I actually went up to the snack shop and close to the observatories. The weather is typically unpredictable. It can be warm at the base in La Canada and then really drop in to cold weather. But, today was perfect, not too hot, not to cold on the top. We started with Jeff, Ben, Dino and John in a fast group and me, Lynda, and Steve in a moderate group. From Sport Chalet it’s straight up at 6-8%. The ride is basically a 20 mile climb for 4600 ft up. The motorcycles are stupid loud and scare me sometimes.

At Red Box, which is about halfway, we saw Ben, Jeff, Dino, and John again, who had already gone up and returned from the Observatory. After Red box there is one bit of a descent, and the rest of the climb.

At the top we roamed around the Radio / TV towers and walked around the snack shop lookout building. The Cosmic Cafe is closed until April, but there is lemonade, coffee and tea for a donation.

The descent is fast and furious. The scenery is amazing. From the top, you can over all of Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley.
